Metal Detecting Code of Ethics



Metal Detecting is a fantastic hobby that we must protect by always following this simple code of ethics.  Not only should you yourself follow these code of ethics but you should stand to enforce them as well.  If you see other detectorists behaving badly say something, one bad apple can spoil the bunch in this case and the last thing we want to do is limit ourselves to where we can hunt by acting without respect for others property.

Metal Detecting Code of Ethics




  • I Shall leave all gates and entrances as I found them.
  • I Shall Not contaminate wells, streams, or any other water supplies.
  • I Shall fill all holes that I dig while metal detecting.
  • I Shall Not tamper with signs, structures or other property.
  • I Shall use thoughtfulness, consideration, and courtesy at all times.
  • I Shall protect my hobby, and always act as a goodwill ambassador.
  • I Shall respect private property and will not treasure hunt without the land owners permission.
  • I Shall appreciate and protect our heritage of natural resources, wildlife, and private property.
  • I Shall Not litter and will pick up any trash that I dig up or find on the ground while treasure hunting.
  • I Shall Not destroy private property, buildings, or what is left of ghost towns and deserted structures.

Dirt Fishing Silver - Massive Coin Spill

Video Provided By: Down South Detecting Dirt fishing is a game of patience and persistence.  Finding metal with a metal detector is easy, finding a place to metal detect where you might actually turn up something interesting is a whole different story.  I imagine many detectorists give up after a short time, finding only pull tabs and clad coins .  If you want to find silver, you have to go to where the silver is.  This video is a great example of what a good permission can offer.   Though finding a coin spill like this is rare, finding silver coins on a good permission is quite common.  Homes that pre-date 1950 are the permissions you should be after.  Most cities and towns have an "old town" where the older buildings and homes are grouped together.  Often times when I get one permission, it leads to another just by talking and asking questions.  If you find someone who has lived in the area for a long time they will know who bought which house when and how

Loket Castle, Czech Republic Loket castle is a gothic style 12th-century castle.  I have come today to visit the dungeon where I can view all types of medieval torture devices.
